Waymo is a self-driving technology company known for achieving the world’s very first fully automated driving trip in a car without a steering wheel or pedals. The company utilizes technology that was first developed with Google back in 2009; technology which has been extensively improved and evaluated through over one billion miles of simulation testing every year.
FCA has joined with Waymo in a new partnership that includes developing 100 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid models that will be equipped with advanced self-driving technology. The Pacifica Hybrids will be added to Waymo’s test fleet in early 2017 and used to help both company’s gain more knowledge regarding how to bring fully self-driving cars to the masses.

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids used in the project will receive several changes, including alterations to their powertrains, chassis and electrical systems. Test models have already been produced and put through trials at FCA’s proving grounds in Chelsea, Michigan, and Yucca, Arizona, along with being tested at Waymo sites in California.
Approximately 1.2 million fatalities occur every year and human error is the cause in 94 percent of cases. Fully self-driving cars as well as more advanced semi-autonomous technologies could significantly reduce fatalities caused by car accidents, and FCA wants to take part in bringing this to fruition.

“The Pacifica Hybrid will be a great addition to our fully self-driving test fleet. FCA’s product development and manufacturing teams have been agile partners, enabling us to go from program kickoff to full vehicle assembly in just six months,” said John Krafcik, Chief Executive Officer, Waymo. “They've been great partners, and we look forward to continued teamwork with them as we move into 2017.”
