Electric Vehicle (EV) Cost of Ownership

When you factor in the long-term costs of owning an electric vehicle, buying one can seem like a great investment. Here are just a few reasons why.

Fuel Savings

Perhaps the best reason to own an electric vehicle right now is the amount of money you could be saving on fuel. Gas is expensive, and even the most fuel-efficient cars can really hurt your budget if you drive a lot. However, research from Consumer Reports suggests that owning an electric vehicle and doing most of your fueling at home could save you anywhere from $800 to $1,000 a year on fuel.

Maintenance

Since electric vehicles are less mechanically complex than traditional gasoline-powered cars, they are much easier and less expensive to maintain. Generally speaking, you can expect to spend about half as much on maintenance over the course of your vehicle's lifespan if you own an electric vehicle instead of a gasoline-powered model.

Depreciation

The analysts at Consumer Reports have also found that electric vehicles are holding onto their value better than comparable gasoline-powered cars. This is especially true now that electric cars can drive faster, longer distances than ever before on a single full charge.
