Choosing the Best Type of Motor Oil

For the first-time buyer of motor oil, the huge oil aisle at the parts store or supermarket can be incredibly confusing. Besides the recommendations listed in your vehicle's service manual, the other factors to consider when choosing the best motor oil include the climate of the area you live in, the mileage and age of your vehicle, and how the car is driven. Our certified automotive technicians can happily assist in your choice.

Conventional

Convention motor oil is the most common type of motor oil and also the cheapest. It's made of refined crude oil extracted from the ground and manufactured in a factory. It's most appropriate for light-duty cars that don't travel very far home, especially for those who live wherever the temperature doesn't change much between seasons.

Full Synthetic

Full synthetic can offer the best lubrication, oxidation resistance, and performance enhancement from engine oil. It's entirely produced from scratch in a factory or lab, making it much more refined than conventional oil. This makes it great at preventing oil sludge and lasts longer between oil changes. It protects against thermal breakdown and is the most adaptable to extremely hot or cold temperatures. It could improve the efficiency of your motor to make noticeable gains in performance and gas mileage. Any motor that runs conventional oil can use synthetic oils without any additional modifications.

Synthetic Blends

Cheaper than full synthetic but more expensive than conventional motor oil, synthetic blended motor oil is a mixture of the two combined with additives. It can provide some of the same benefits of full synthetic at less cost, such as improved oxidation resistance. It lasts longer than conventional, but not as long as full synthetic. Like full synthetic, it can safely replace conventional oil.

High Mileage

High mileage motor oil is a specific variety of oil with many beneficial additives for engines that have passed 75,000 miles of driving. It can be bought as conventional oil, fully synthetic, or as a synthetic blend. The additives can improve gas mileage and help reduce oil consumption and emissions from older engines, such as a seal conditioner to minimize oil leaks.
